Contract rules on second jobs

Longer note · updated October 2026

Your main job keeps the household running, so check that a second job fits your employment contract before you start.

Clauses to look for

  • Outside work: notice or permission may be required before taking other paid work.
  • Non-compete: working for competitors or the same clients may be restricted.
  • Conflict of interest: overlap with your employer's business may need to be declared.
  • Company time and equipment: side work on work devices or during working hours is usually forbidden.
  • Intellectual property: some contracts claim what you create, especially if it relates to your role.

Asking

Write to HR describing the side work, when you'd do it, and that it won't use company time or equipment. Keep the answer.

Getting advice

If a clause is broad and the side work is close to your profession, speak to an employment lawyer or your union first.
